Heaux Tales Album Review

Jazmine Sullivan gifted a true gem with her new R&B album Heaux Tales. The soulful singer/songwriter is best known for her "angry song" connotation, infamous outbreak singles: 'Need you bad' 'Bust your windows,' and her musical hiatus. Speaking of her music hiatus, it has been five years since she has dropped a project! Her last project, Reality Show, was released back in 2015. I believe that Jazmine is very underrated as an R&B artist, and has not received the full appreciation she deserves. Her song 'In love with another man' alone should have her sitting at the table with the other R&B girlies, but I digress. The highly anticipated buzz around this album has been non-stop. So, I had to listen and let you guys know what I think.

I feel every woman should listen to Heaux Tales; the album is such a relatable masterpiece. The project consists of 14 tracks, 7.5 of them being full songs. The other half are skits of women sharing their experiences with love. As an interlude/skit lover, each one hit different for me. The women's personal 'heaux tales' cohesively fits with the song that's followed after, making it a non-skip project. Jazmine Sullivan speaks on the strength of a woman and the issues we encounter with dating. She opens the album with intro 'bodies,' spilling all of her sexual endeavors with different men and how she needs to get her life together. The album continues by shedding light on sexual liberation, heartbreak, and the disposal of men. Jazmine collaborated with other modern R&B faves: Ari Lennox, Anderson Paak, and H.E.R. Ari Lennox share a 'heaux tale' of her own, one that we all may be able to relate to (I'm not going to spoil it. Go listen). Ari's Tale is gracefully followed by a more upbeat track, 'Put it Down.' Exposing how as women our actions toward men change as long as he is putting it down right. Track 10, 'Lost One,' would have to be my favorite thanks to its' heart-wrenching lyrics and sorrowful tone. Jazmine speaks on losing a lover due to infidelity. There is an instant regret, and she encourages her lover to have fun but do not fall in love with anyone else.

Don’t have too much fun without me
Please don’t forget me
Try not to love anyone
— Jazmine Sullivan

I truly enjoyed this album. It came just in time for the new year, and I'm appreciative of Jazmine Sullivan's artistry. Heaux Tales was flawlessly curated, includes a track for everyone, and perfect for a wine-down. Please, if you haven't already; go stream Heaux Tales and give Jazmine the flowers she deserves. Thank you for reading, leave a comment down below and let me know what you think of the album!
