Jazmine Sullivan Receives Her Flowers - Jasmine
Singer and songwriter Jazmine Sullivan is now a two-time Grammy winner! The beautiful songstress has been receiving her well-deserved flowers from the music scene, and here at Fusion, we could not be happier. Sullivan's album, Heaux Tales, is such a raw and rare piece of work for women all over. In an NPR interview, Jazmine says that she just wanted to tell the untold stories of women. Our voices are rarely heard or understood, causing us to hesitate about being vulnerable about our struggles. So, to hear other women come out and be open is admirable. I reviewed Jazmine Sullivan's Heaux Tales album when she released it in January 2021, and it's nice to see her win. At the 2022 Grammy awards, Jazmine Sullivan took home to golden Grammys for Best R&B Album and tied with Silk Sonic for Best R&B Performance.
Sullivan has earned 15 Grammy nominations over the last ten years, so this win is not only big but well deserved.
“I think that I wrote this project to deal with my own shame and unforgiveness around some of the decisions that I made in my 20s that weren’t favorable, But what it ended up being was a safe space for Black women to tell their stories. For us to learn from each other, laugh with each other, and not be exploited at the same time.” -Jazmine Sullivan
Sullivan released her deluxe version of 'Heax Tales' February 2022, and began her North American tour. The deluxe, Heaux Tales Mo Tales, had an additional ten tracks; 5 of them being womens personal stories and the other 5 are songs to follow. One tale that I was surpised to hear came from HBO Insecure writer and producer Issa Rae. She discusses a farwell sex exchange with an ex, it was very much relatable. She ends the tale with, "I'm so glad I was cheating on him."
Heaux Tales, Mo' Tales is a project curated by women and for women. If you haven't checked it out please do so. Add it to your self-care routine or playlist! It is beautful to see a Black queen win it kind of feels as if we all did.
